california's aņo nuevo reserve is
one of the only areas on the united states mainland
where northern elephant
seals gather to give birth and breed
the season begins in december, when the males arrive, weighing up to two and a half tons
in late december, the females arrive and form harems on the beaches
by march 31st, most of the seals have gone back to sea
